Behind the Scenes

Oldtimers was born from the convergence of three distinct ideas that unexpectedly came together. Daryl Della’s inspiration began with his grandfather, Henry T. Della, who had previously appeared in Revenge of the Golden Hoot. The initial vision was simple but evocative: a slow-motion shot of Henry walking down Holly Avenue, flanked by neighbor Jack Lewkowitz and Daryl’s Uncle Bill. Around the same time, Ray Revello and Alan Wigley were developing a story imagined for Sean Connery about a group of seniors defending their neighborhood from gang warfare, while Chris Cairo pitched a drama inspired by news reports of elderly individuals selling prescription drugs to make ends meet. These three threads were woven into a single narrative, with the slow-motion sequence as its foundation.

Changes to the cast were inevitable. Uncle Bill was replaced by Ed Kayser due to family tensions with Bill. With Ed taking his place, the story evolved further when Daryl’s father, Hank Della, was brought on to refine the script. Hank reworked the story to add warmth and balance, softening some of the more cynical edges and crafting sharp, memorable dialogue. However, Daryl insisted on keeping darker, riskier elements, most notably the shocking decision to kill off Ed. This move subverted audience expectations by eliminating the film’s comic relief character and delivering an emotional gut punch by killing someone who was playing a version of themself. It was a bold choice that added layers to the film’s exploration of mortality and legacy.

Filming took place over an exhausting but rewarding weekend. The titular Oldtimers—Henry, Jack, and Ed—played exaggerated versions of themselves, squaring off against villains portrayed by Ray Revello, Donald Flores, and Emmanuel Diego. The seniors were pushed beyond their usual comfort zones, memorizing pages of dialogue and performing action-oriented scenes with the enthusiasm of seasoned pros.

One of the standout memories from the production came during the film’s premiere. Held in a packed theater, the senior cast received a standing ovation as they took their bows. The smiles on their faces were unforgettable, especially for Daryl, who now views the film as one of his most personal projects. With the loss of both Henry and Hank in the years since, Oldtimers has become more than a movie—it’s a heartfelt tribute to family and the generations that shape us.

- Hank, Oldtimers

In 2023, Daryl revisited the Oldtimers universe with the comic book sequel Oldtimers Bring Hell. The new story finally brings Bill back into the fold and gives Henry T. Della’s character the more explosive ending he would have wanted.

From its irreverent humor to its surprising narrative twists, Oldtimers represents the unique spirit of Dollars & Donuts: a blend of bold storytelling, heartfelt moments, and a willingness to take risks, even if it means subverting audience expectations in unexpected ways. It’s a love letter to the elders who inspired it, capturing the joy, chaos, and poignancy of cross-generational collaboration.
