behind the scenes

In 2022, with just weeks left before the Dollars & Donuts is Dead. Long Live Dollars & Donuts! premiere, Daryl realized the lineup needed one more film. Enter Ash-hole, a script by David Lambertson he stumbled upon on Reddit. With the clock ticking, Daryl flew back to the Bay Area, rounded up his friends, and shot the film in a single afternoon. Edited at breakneck speed, the movie premiered on time, surprising audiences with one last unexpected treat.

To connect the story to The Alibi (2014), Becker Von Felsburg suggested making the funeral in the script for Lucky Louie, bringing Ray Revello into the film through stock footage. He didn’t even have to show up! Daryl rewrote the ending, softening its cynicism and steering the dark comedy toward something sweeter and more uplifting.

Becker and Chris Ross star as Louie’s long-suffering best friends, their real-life decades of camaraderie shining through every scene. The film’s backdrop carries its own emotional weight: it was shot at the same chapel where Daryl’s father had been recently interred. Transforming a space of immense grief into one of creativity and humor was both cathartic and defiant. The bathroom scenes required a little ingenuity: a mirror on the floor and a suspended toilet seat created the iconic toilet bowl shots, capturing a lower POV than would have been possible otherwise.

One final twist to Ash Holes’ story: since the script deal allowed other filmmakers to produce their own versions, the Dollars & Donuts crew later stumbled across a Scottish team’s rendition of Ash-Hole. Watching someone else’s take on the material was both surreal and serendipitous, sparking an unexpected cross-continental connection.

dollars & donuts continuity

Ash Holes kicks off with a classic scene lifted from The Alibi, capturing the unfortunate demise of Lance Louie. Originally a standalone dark comedy, Ash Holes was cleverly reimagined by Becker Von Felsburg to feature Louie, linking it back to The Alibi, and weaving another thread into the expanding Dollars & Donuts Universe.

Curious to see what led Louie to his fateful end? Follow the breadcrumbs back and witness the moments that sparked it all. And while you’re there, enjoy the chameleon-like prowess of Chris Ross, who returns in Ash Holes as a completely different character — because why not?
